The new year brings several new changes to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS). NMCRS offers a Budget for Baby class, budgeting assistance, blended retirement assistance, quick assist loans, traditional loans, loans for needs, emergency leave, and disaster assistance.
Budget for Baby classes are available for active duty, dependents and retired veterans. Classes are held twice a month at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Call ahead for the specific schedule (542-3515).
Participants of Budget for Baby classes will now receive $25 gift cards and a knitted blanket upon completion or have the option of receiving a baby sea bag with a knitted blanket (while supplies last). Participants are authorized to attend Budget for Baby classes once per pregnancy.
David Blyar of NMCRS Jacksonville, said, "Budgeting assistance is a free service offered to anyone who may need help with creating a budget or planning for the future of buying a car, moving out of the barracks or getting married."
He also stressed the importance of the Blended Retirement assistance offered to active duty military members who fall under the optional blended retirement or traditional retirement plan.
"Employees at NMCRS are able to help service members make a decision that will ultimately be the best option when deciding which plan suits their needs," said Blyar.
Quick Assist Loans (QAL) are available for active duty service members who may need quick financial assistance. Recipients receive a no-interest loan for $500.
A recent change to this program is that military members are now only authorized five QALs throughout their military career.
QALs must be paid back over a three to 10-month period but may be paid off sooner.
Traditional loans are offered to active duty, retirees and family members in need of financial assistance.
These loans may be received as needed and do not need to be paid off before receiving another traditional loan. Recipients will receive financial assistance based on their needs, along with budget counseling.
Traditional loans are to be repaid over a 24-month timeframe or based on the recipient's set budget.
Emergency leave loans are given to active duty members who are in need of assistance during a time of authorized emergency leave.
Disaster assistance is authorized by the Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax) commanding officer during a time of evacuation mandatory or voluntary.
Single service members are eligible to receive $300 and service members with dependents are eligible to receive $600. Upon receiving assistance, arrangements are made for paying back the disaster assistance loan.
NMCRS is a non-profit, volunteer service organization which helps clients improve their personal financial skills and encourages individual financial responsibility.
For assistance or to volunteer, please contact the NAS Jax NMCRS at 542-3515.
