From Staff

The Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax) Flight Line Café has earned a five-star rating from Navy Region Southeast seven consecutive times. The galley is now competing for the prestigious Capt. Edward F. Ney award - a quality of life program, affecting the health, morale and retention of all Navy Sailors.

Last week, the galley staff hosted Ney Inspector CWO5 Wanda Trammell, food service officer at Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic who spent several hours questioning the food service staff on everything from recordkeeping and training to food portion sizes and customer service.

During the evaluation, Trammell observed culinary specialists cooking and preparing food, providing service during meals, sanitation procedures, ordering processes and food storage.

According to CWO4 Benny Brockington, NAS Jax Flight Line Café Food Service Officer, the team has been working many hours preparing for this inspection and is the 'best of the best.'

"This evaluation is the Super bowl of our profession it represent the passion and drive you have for the culinary arts," said Brockington. "It has truly been a team effort in getting us to this point through devoted hours at work and attention to the small details. We have a strong foundation here and I owe some of the success to CWO5 (retired) Kathy Wiseman and CWO4 (Retired) Charles Jakes for moving the train in the right direction during their tours here as the food service officers. I have challenged my team and they have performed well while growing tremendously in food service along the way. This award is for being the best and it starts soon as you step on deck."

CSCM Sandra Almond, Leading Chief Petty Officer of the Flight Line Café feels that everything went very well and the Sailors did their best. "Now, we just have to wait and hopefully we are selected because we've worked very hard for this," she said.

The Ney award is named in honor of Capt. Edward F. Ney, head of the subsistence division of the Bureau of Supplies and Account from 1940-45. The annual award program fosters excellence in food service across the Navy enterprise while improving the quality of life for Navy personnel.
