Just before Halloween each year, Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Jacksonville holds a blood drive at Bldg. 110 aboard NAS Jacksonville, to help boost the Northeast Florida blood supply.
The call for donors went out and 31 personnel answered the call on Oct. 19. OneBlood phlebotomists were kept busy and collected 20 pints of blood, along with two double red cell donations between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Double red blood cell donation is when OneBlood only collects red blood cells -- not platelets or plasma -- allowing them to collect double the amount of blood cells. This type of donation uses a process called automation (apheresis) that allows donors to give twice the donation of red cells than compared to a whole blood donation.
OneBlood donations help trauma, surgery and chemotherapy patients in local hospitals when they need it most. The OneBlood service area stretches from Key West to Pensacola to Charleston.
