Navy Community Recreation hosted the annual Back to School Celebration at Dewey's Aug. 12. Military families gathered to enjoy the music and fun activities provided by NAS Jacksonville's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department.
Children had the chance to journey through the wild, bounce around, shoot hoops, or climb and slide due to the variety of inflatable activities made available. Other free activities included face painting, a balloon artist, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, bean bag toss and even a pony carousel provided by Diamond D Ranch.
The highlight of the evening came when the children were given the opportunity to meet and take pictures with special guests Elsa and Iron Man.
"Look! It's Iron Man! Hi, Iron Man," exclaimed the children in excitement. As Elsa chatted with a pair of sisters, she mentioned to them, "I have a sister, too" referring to her younger sister, Anna, from the beloved Disney movie Frozen.
Navy Community Recreation Director Tom Kubalewski stated, "I enjoy this event every year because of the joy it brings to the families. There is always so much to choose from in such a small space, so the kids are constantly bouncing around from one thing to the next with the biggest smiles on their faces."
The NEX displayed a Lollipop Tree, that allowed any child to pick a lollipop and win a fun prize. The Florida Youth Challenge Academy was also on site to provide parents with information for their at-risk youth program. Thank you to our event sponsors USAA, VyStar Credit Union, AT&T, Sprint and Brenau University.
