'Godfather of funk' visits NAS Jax

George Clinton, known by fans as the ''godfather of Funk,'' and a few members of the Parliament/Funka-delic band visited NAS Jax to tour the installation and meet and greet Sailors at the NAS Jax Navy Exchange Sept. 27.

Fans gathered at the Navy Exchange hoping to get a photo and autographs from Clinton and a few band members.

Clinton is best know as the greatest innovator of urban-based soul, rock and funk for more than 40 years.

''It's awesome to actually meet the 'godfather of Funk,''' said AD1(AW/SW) Camanche Vasquez of VS-22. ''This is truly a morale-booster.''

AC2 David Smiley of NAS Jax Air Operations Department, meets Musician George Clinton and a few members of his band, Parliament Funkadelic at the NAS Jax Navy Exchange. Smiley says he is one of their biggest fans and was thrilled to learn they visiting the base.

Clinton and the band members said they were very pleased to have the opportunity to meet the Sailors. ''They contribute so much to our country. I think this is the least we could do,'' said Clinton.

''We are hope come back and perform a concert at NAS Jax in the near future.''
