The Multi-Cultural Awareness Committee (MCAC) held its seventh annual Multi-Cultural Awareness Fair at the Bachelor Officer's Quarters Pavilion Aug. 24.

The fair showcased numerous different cultures through entertainment, command-sponsored booths, car and bike show and special food provided by the galley.

The special event was made possible thanks to the efforts of the MCAC volunteers throughout the base, both tenant commands and civilians. "This has been the best and largest turnout I have ever seen," said Commander, Navy Region Southeast Rear Adm. Mark Boensel.

Committee members give many hours of their time coordinating this event each year. "This event is a perfect opportunity to bring military and Department of Defense employees together to learn about the diverse cultures working aboard NAS Jax," said MCAC President TM1(SW/AW) Felecia Marcano.

"It's a good chance to get to see other cultures and enjoy the entertainment," added Marcano. "If we can get people together to enjoy these fairs it will improve the working atmosphere for all of us. There are so many differences in culture, if we understand that then it will enable us to work better and understand each other."

"The fair would not have been such a success if it had not been for all of the volunteers," said NAS Jax Equal Opportunity Advisor HMCS(AW/FMF) Bryce McNair. "We had volunteers commands throughout the base. They worked hard to put everything together so that everyone could come out and enjoy the festivities. They have done a great job."

The day full of events was kicked off with a few words from NAS Jax Commanding Officer Capt. Jack Scorby Jr. " The MCAC has done a great job putting this fair together," said Scorby. "Our community here at NAS Jax is made up of a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, ethnic groups and spiritual beliefs. This fair is a great way to get out here and recognize the different contributions of each of these groups."

Once the food line opened, the line grew longer and longer as guests gathered to dine on the various types of food from different cultures. The lines were long but the volunteers

and staff worked hard to feed all the guests. There was also plenty of water and cold drinks to go around.

While everyone was enjoying the great meal provided, entertainment was provided by the Navy Region Southeast Band led by MU1 Kenny Oliver. The band played as the vocals where sung by MU2 Mallory McKendry.

Other entertainment included African, Polynesian and Salsa dances and the Caribbean Stilt Walkers.

There was a good turn out for the Car, Truck and Bike Show. BMC(SW) Jamie Hamilton of NAS Jax won best of show with his 2003 Cadillac Escalade.

First place in the motorcycle category went to AO1(AW) Ron McClain of NAS Jax. Michael Paul of Fleet Readiness Center Southeast placed first for his car and the first place truck award went to car went to CWO2 Eligio Zelez of the NAS Jax Security Department.

All in all it was a very good turnout for this year's fair. The planning for next year will begin early.

Anyone interested in helping out with next year's event or who would like to join the MCAC, can call 542-1225.
