"This is my first tour at NAS Jax and I'm looking forward to getting to know the people and working as a team to accomplish our mission," he said, enthusiastically.
"I'm a big believer in teamwork and I certainly recognize that it takes everyone working together if you hope to be successful. As a team striving for common goals there is nothing that we, as a team, can't accomplish. I would like our team to achieve its vision, which is 'to be recognized by the warfighter as the world's finest naval air station.' Our role here is to support the fleet, the fighter and just as importantly, the family, and I want to ensure that we provide the best support possible. This will enable naval aviation warfighting readiness and ensure mission success."
"Since arriving here in mid June, Scorby has been visiting numerous commands and meeting the military and civilian employees who work on the base. "I'm honored to be a part of the NAS Jax team and in my short time on board, I've been extraordinarily impressed by the men and women of this air station and all of their accomplishments under Capt. Dobson's leadership. NAS Jax has always been a busy place and I know that there will continue to be many challenges and opportunities over the next several years which I eagerly look forward to," continued Scorby.
And many of those opportunities are already in the works. "There is a lot going on at NAS Jax with many changes and many challenges. This has always been a very busy, active installation and this is especially true right now and as we head into the future," Scorby stated.
"To name just a few of the challenges, more than a quarter billion dollars in capital improvements has already begun. There will be the HS to HSM helicopter transition, the S-3 Viking sundown and the relocation of the
P-3 squadrons from Maine. I am committed to working with all tenant commands and contractors to ensure a seamless transition and doing everything within our area of responsibility to give the warfighters what they need to accomplish their mission."
"Additionally, I know that many of our squadrons, medical and security personnel as well as numerous individual augmentees are currently deployed into harm's way. I am committed to ensuring that the NAS Jacksonville team provides all necessary support to these squadrons, units and personnel as they prepare for their deployments. Just as importantly, I'm committed to ensuring that we take care of their families while they are away," he continued.
Scorby also plans to continue to strengthen ties with the local community. "I'm also committed to continuing NAS Jacksonville's great relationship with the community. I look forward to working closely with the Jacksonville community and ensuring the Navy remains good stewards within the First Coast area," he said.
On a more personal level, Scorby realizes being in charge of a major command is a huge undertaking. "This is completely different than any of my previous assignments. I have had four operational flying tours and a variety of staff tours. In those particular tours, the issues were mostly operationally focused. By comparison, the challenges, complexity and number of issues to deal with at NAS Jacksonville are completely different than anything I have been previously exposed to," said Scorby. "It's extraordinarily interesting and I will certainly be relying on the expertise of the NAS Jax team as we work through these challenges together."
In his free time, Scorby enjoys spending time with his wife, Chris and son, John. "I have been blessed to have a wonderful family. Families are so very important. I particularly admire our service members and their families for all of the sacrifices that they make on behalf of our nation. They are the ones that deserve all the accolades," remarked Scorby.
He also enjoys most sports and working out, although the avid snow skier is now considering trading in the snow skis for some water skis. He also plans to work on his golf game.
As for one final thought, Scorby says he is honored to be given the opportunity to take the helm as commanding officer of NAS Jax.
"I will serve you all to the best of my abilities and will remain committed to making us the finest air station that we are capable of becoming. No matter what the job, each person on the NAS Jax team plays an integral part to our success and it is a privilege to serve with you," said Scorby.
