Tamblyn, a native of Hillsdale, Mich., graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.
Upon com-pletion of flight training in Pensacola, Fla. he was designated a naval flight officer in February 1994. After completing S-3A replacement training at VS-41 in San Diego, Tamblyn reported to the "Scouts" of VS-24 where he served as a maintenance branch officer and naval flight officer (NFO) NATOPS officer. While attached to the Scouts, he made two Mediterranean and one North Atlantic deployments on board USS Nimitz (CVN 68).
In June 1988, Tamblyn reported to VS-27 where he was assigned as a fleet replacement instructor and NFO curriculum officer for the S-3A/B aircraft. In March 1990, he reported on board USS Kitty Hawk (CVN 63) for duty as assistant navigator. During this tour, the ship traveled on a 15,000-nautical-mile transit of South America that returned the Kitty Hawk to her homeport of San Diego.
In January 1992, Tamblyn reported to Commander, Strike Fighter Wings Atlantic (CSFWL) as the administration officer. Following CSFWL's decommissioning in October 1992, he was assigned to Commander, Sea Control Wing Atlantic as the VS operations officer.
