Special ombudsmen training class held

The first regional Certify Ombudsman Trainer (COT) class was held at NAS Jacksonville last week in an effort to train and certify command ombudsmen and Fleet and Family Support Center staff to teach Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT) and to educate new and existing command ombudsmen on changes in the program. The class was part of Commander, Navy Installation Command's (CNIC) initiative to upgrade the Navy Family Ombudsmen Program to better assist commands and families in times of need.
"The Navy's Ombudsmen Program has grown in size and importance over the years. The day-to-day service of the ombudsman to Navy families is invaluable," stated Navy Region Southeast (CNRSE) Regional Ombudsmen Program Manager Dianne Parker.
In 2004, CNIC conducted a comprehensive review and assembled a working group in San Diego to look at the program and update the ombudsman manual and training guidelines. Concurrently, the Vice Chief of Navy Operations requested that the Naval Inspector General conduct an in-depth review of the Navy Family Ombudsman Program and make recommendations on how the Navy could improve the program. Due to this thorough review of the program, a new instruction was drafted, ombudsman standardized training was developed, the ombudsman manual was updated and fleet-wide training has been implemented.
