Thousands of military members and their families came out to Jacksonville Beach's Adventure Landing June 6. The USO closed down the park to the public that evening to hold a special event for more than 2,000 Sailors and their families from NAS Jacksonville, NS Mayport and surrounding area commands.

The families were able to enjoy Shipwreck Island Water Park from 6-11 p.m. after purchasing a ticket from the USO for only $1 per person. This event was sponsored and made possible by a grant donated from VyStar Credit Union. The donation allowed the USO to make up the difference of renting out the park for the night.

"I really appreciate the USO, VyStar and Adventure Landing for a making this event possible. I believe this is their way of showing us how much our service to this country is appreciated. It's a very nice return and thank you to military members," said AT1(AW) Alicia Sampedro who is stationed at NAS Jax.

And, if you just weren't in the mood to get wet, the rest of the park was open for some dry fun which included the many arcade games, miniature golf and go-cart racing competitions.

"I think it's great that the USO and VyStar are taking care of military families. This is a special night where military families can feel safe because they are surrounded by people they know. I've been able to spend time with friends I haven't seen in a long time and I would like it very much if more of the same kind of events were offered in the future," said PS1(AW) Janet DeFranco who is stationed at NS Mayport.

"This is a family event. It's important that we not only say thank you to our military for their service and sacrifice, but to also recognize the families who pay the price as well. Being able to make this event a memorable one is priceless. Military night is a fun family event that enhances family cohesiveness," said Greater Jacksonville Area USO Executive Director K.C. McCarthy.

"This is the second year the USO has offered Adventure Landing Night. This very popular event completely sold out quickly. Next year, the USO hopes to get two sponsors so we can try to offer this event twice," added NS Mayport USO Director Wendy Layton.
