Naval Hospital Jack-sonville's team of laboratory technicians and clinical pathologists, both civilian and military, celebrated National Laboratory Professionals Week April 20 when Naval Hospital Jacksonville Commanding Officer Capt. Bruce Gillingham and other staff gathered to cut a cake commemorating the event.

This nation-wide observance, sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, is an annual celebration of the medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. This year's theme is "Laboratory Professionals Get Results."

Gillingham told the laboratory department team, "The front line providers - and our patients - appreciate all you do. The fact you get it right (lab results) and get it back quickly makes all the difference."

Laboratory Department Head Cmdr. Jaime Diaz-Sola leads a staff of approximately 75 laboratory technicians, histology technicians, cytotechnologists, medical technicians and pathologists who complete more than a million tests every year.

They are all fully credentialed, registered and certified in their fields. The lab is fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks and was licensed by the Food and Drug Administration for transfusion services.

"All our civilians, contractors and military personnel have the very best training available and perform their duty in an excellent manner day in and day out. They put our patients first. We do our best to perform timely, accurate, comprehensive lab results to aid our providers with diagnosis, treatment and preventing disease for their patients," concluded Diaz-Sola.
