NAS Jacksonville's leaders recognized the achievements of their Sailors March 8 by hosting a Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) Luncheon at the NAS Jax Officers' Club. The luncheon recognized nearly 60 SOQs for the fourth quarter of 2006 from each of NAS Jax's tenant commands.

"I'd like to thank everyone for coming out today to recognize our Sailors," said NAS Jax Command Master Chief CMDCM(SW) Chris Green just before the NAS Jax Honor Support Team posted colors and the chaplain gave the invocation. Green then introduced the luncheon's guest speaker, CDMCM(SS/SW) James McLain, command master chief of HS-15.

McLain began his speech by welcoming the Sailors, Junior Sailors and Blue Jackets of the Quarter as well as family and friends. "It's truly an honor to be asked to speak at a function such as this where we honor some of our Navy's top Sailors," he said.

McLain then addressed the SOQs. "You were selected for this honor for you professionalism, your sense of mission accomplishment, your service to your fellow Sailors and for your commitment to community involvement," said McLain. "I've had the pleasure of being a member on Sailor of the Quarter and Sailor of the Year boards at the Region, carrier air group, wing, force and command levels. Perhaps the most telling common denominator is the exceptional quality of the Sailors competing for these honors. Trying to select one exceptional Sailor among a number of exceptional Sailors is not an easy task. Having said that, if you are here today, you have earned it and you deserve it. Good on you shipmates."

Guest Speaker CMDCM(SS/SW) James McClain, command master chief of HS-15, gives a riveting speech praising the Sailor's of the Quarter during the luncheon.

Following his remarks, the guests enjoyed a Polynesian-style lunch prepared by the NAS Jax Officers' Club.

Green took the podium once again after lunch to individually recognize each SOQ and those who sponsored the event which include: the NAS Jax Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), USO, VyStar Credit Union and Geico and USAA insurance companies.

"We've been doing the SOQ luncheons for a little while now. No matter how bad my week is going, when I come here I get reenergized. I just really enjoy doing this," said Green.

He then challenged each table for applause when their Sailors were called. "We'll get the old applause-o-meter out and have a good time," continued Green.

During each presentation, the Sailors were presented with a gift envelope with a letter of recognition, a $50 savings bond courtesy of VyStar Credit Union and a coupon book from MWR. There was also a special drawing, which awarded three Sailors and their families a coupon book from Applebee's Restaurant with a $50 coupon for every week of the upcoming year. The NAS Jax USO coordinated sponsorship of the free meals with the company.
