Commander, Sea Control Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet is proud to recognize its 2007 Sea Sailor of the Year, AE1(AW) James Johns. Johns was selected from a highly competitive group of peers and has distinguished himself as a leader and a true Navy professional.

Johns was born in Gainesville, Fla. After graduating from Columbia High School in 1992, he enlisted into the Navy in March 1993 and reported to Orlando, Fla. for recruit training. Upon completion of recruit training he stayed in Orlando to attend apprenticeship training before reporting to his first duty station.

In July 1993, he reported to Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the "Blue Angels." Initially assigned to the administrative division, he was later designated an aviation electrician's mate. After fulfilling his initial enlistment, he elected to separate from the service only to return four months later.

In March 1996, he reported to the "Topcats" of VS-31 and made two deployments, one on board USS George Washington in support of Operation Southern Watch and the second on board USS John C. Stennis to the Persian Gulf.

In 1999, he reported to NAS Oceana, Va. Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department and was selected for advancement to second class petty officer.

In April 2003, he reported to the "Maulers" of VS-32 making two deployments on board USS Enterprise in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. In 2004, he qualified as an enlisted aviation warfare specialist and was advanced to first class petty officer. Redeploying in 2007, he was recently hand-selected to assume the duties as the maintenance control flight deck coordinator.

Johns is a valuable asset to the sea control community. He is a recognized expert in the Viking community. His exceptional leadership, mentoring and counseling clearly distinguished him as a leader among his peers.

Johns will represent Commander, Sea Control Wing, U. S. Atlantic Fleet at the Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet "Sea" Sailor of the Year board.
