While numerous gyms off base may offer catchy deals, don't overlook an opportunity for free personal training aboard the base. The Naval Air Station (NAS Jax) Jacksonville Fitness Center and Gym have seven fully-certified trainers available to work with your schedule on your goals.
"We looked at the program a few years ago and made a lot of changes so that we can provide better service for our Sailors, family members, retirees and civilian employees," said Jill Sheppard, fitness director for NAS Jax Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Jan. 2 was Trainer Appreci-ation Day and NAS Jax Execu-tive Officer Capt. Michael Connor took the opportunity to educate the trainers about what is expected of the Sailors they work with.
"I thought it would be helpful for the trainers to see what Sailors do every day, so they can better understand what they do while at work," Connor said.
Connor took the trainers on a tour of a P-8A Poseidon aircraft at Patrol Squadron 30.
"Even though I come to the base every day, it was cool to see the planes up close and I learned a lot," said MWR Fitness Center Coordinator Jennifer Price.
For those interested in working with a trainer, paperwork is available at the desk at the Fitness Center, Gym, or Family Fitness Center, which is located behind the Youth Activities Center. After selecting dates and times that work with schedules, individuals are placed with trainers.
"An initial assessment will be given to individuals, depending on the trainer. It can range from a 2-minute running test or a walking test, followed by push-ups, sit-ups or squats if the person is capable," said Fitness Trainer Kristen Robinson.
"Following the assessment, we can design a program to help people reach their goals."
Initially, the trainers will work with individuals for a limited time to get them started in the right direction. If the trainers are available, they can continue to work one-on-one if available. According to Robinson the trainers stay extremely busy with special events such as the current Total Body Transformation. Other fitness events include the Winter Meltdown, Fit Games and upcoming races, like the Polar Plunge and the Captain's Cup Valentine 5K.
In addition to working with individuals, the trainers also teach classes at each of the fitness locations throughout the week.
