Military members teamed up for the inaugural weeklong Navy Fit Games Challenge at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, hosted by the Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) Department's Fitness program. The event was held July 17-21 at the Fitness Center Outdoor Pavilion and Mulberry Cove Marina.
Teams competed each day from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., successfully completing a variety of challenges including a tire flip, sprint relay, vertical jump, rower relay, sled push relay, pull-ups, wall ball, burpees and tug-o-war.
Mixed in were a few "mystery" challenges that pushed participants to their maximum strengths. Such mystery events included kettle bells, box jumps, TRX and more.
"This event was created from a collaboration of all the trainers here at NAS Jax," remarked Fitness Specialist Robert Patton. "Our (high intensity training) classes have become very popular, so we thought about running a 'functional fitness' competition. I think this is a good change from the normal 5K runs."
The event concluded with a cookout and awards ceremony under a pavilion at the Mulberry Cove Marina. Participants enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, salad and a variety of fruit, along with ice cold water.
Coming in first place overall included Executive Office Capt. Michael Connor, Lt. Shawn Kline and MA1 David Smith of NAS Jacksonville and Lt. Mike Beaver of Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) with ASC Howard Williams of FRCSE as a substitute. Command Coastal Riverine Squadron (CRS)10 achieved second place thanks to its members LSCS John Robayo, ET3 Corey Schell, IT1 Kevin Stanton and ET3 Amber Smith. Third place went to GMSN Austin Brodhacker, AOAN Nate Smalley, GM1 Dandre Wilson and AO1 Antoinette Vaughner of Navy Munitions Command Atlantic Jacksonville.
LCSC John Robayo of CRS 10 added, "Our team came together to build morale and we have really enjoyed interacting with the other teams."
